Tax Consultant Near Me in Lahore: How to Choose the Right One

If you have just typed “tax consultant near me” into Google, you probably have something specific on your desk: a return to file, an FBR notice with a deadline on it, an NTN to register, or a business that needs setting up properly. You want someone who knows the work and whom you can actually reach.

This guide is for that moment. It explains when being close by really matters, what to check before you hand over your documents, the warning signs to walk away from, and what to bring to the first meeting. At the end you will find our own office details in Lahore if you would like to sit down with us.

Does your tax consultant really need to be near you?

Less than you might think. Almost all FBR work now happens online: returns and wealth statements are filed on the IRIS portal, notices arrive by email and on IRIS, and most replies are submitted electronically. Many of our clients send their documents on WhatsApp and never visit the office.

Being nearby does help in a few situations:

  • FBR notices, audits and hearings. When a case is heard at the Regional Tax Office or the Large Taxpayers Office in Lahore, a consultant who attends in person and knows the local practice is a real advantage.
  • Document-heavy cases. Property transfers, inherited assets, several bank accounts or a business with years of records are easier to sort out across a table than over chat.
  • Registrations that need originals. Some steps for business registration, SECP filings or LCCI membership go faster when someone can collect and check originals.
  • Trust. For a first engagement, many people simply want to see the office and meet the person handling their file.

If none of these apply, a good consultant in another city will serve you just as well as one down the road. Overseas Pakistanis in particular can have everything handled remotely.

What to check before you hire a tax consultant

  • Are they allowed to represent you? Under Section 223 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, only certain people can appear before the Commissioner on your behalf, such as advocates, chartered or cost accountants and registered income tax practitioners. Ask plainly which one they are. It matters the day a notice turns into a hearing.
  • Experience with your kind of case. A salaried return, a shopkeeper’s business return, a freelancer earning in dollars and a private limited company are very different jobs. Ask how many similar cases they handle each year.
  • A clear scope and fee before work starts. You should know exactly what is included (return, wealth statement, withholding adjustments, notice replies) and what costs extra.
  • They ask for your documents. A consultant who files without seeing your bank statements and tax certificates is guessing, and guesses show up later as notices.
  • They explain the wealth statement. Your wealth statement has to reconcile with your declared income and expenses. If nobody explains how yours reconciles, ask.
  • You stay in control of your IRIS account. Your login belongs to you. A professional will not mind if you change the password after filing.
  • A real office and a phone that gets answered. Tax work is not finished on the day of filing. You need to be able to reach the same person when a notice arrives months later.

Red flags: when to walk away

  • Promising a refund, or “zero tax”, before seeing a single document.
  • Filing a wealth statement that does not reconcile, just to finish quickly.
  • No written fee, no receipt, and no record of what was filed.
  • Telling you that FBR notices “don’t matter” or can be ignored.
  • Offering to “manage” an FBR official. Apart from being wrong, it puts you at risk, not them.

What a good tax consultant actually does for you

Filing the return is only part of the job. A consultant worth paying will usually help with:

What to bring to your first meeting

Bringing the right papers turns a one-hour meeting into a finished return. Collect what applies to you:

  • CNIC, plus the mobile number and email registered on IRIS (or your IRIS login if you already have one)
  • Salary certificate and tax deduction certificate from your employer, or your business records for the year
  • Bank statements for the full tax year (1 July to 30 June) for every account
  • Withholding tax certificates: bank profit, dividends, mobile and electricity bills, vehicle token tax
  • Property and vehicle documents, including anything bought or sold during the year
  • Last year’s return and wealth statement
  • Any FBR notice you have received, with its date

If you are not sure whether you are a filer at the moment, check first with our guide on how to check your FBR filer (ATL) status. If you have missed this year’s deadline, read what to do after missing the 31 October deadline.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a tax consultant charge in Pakistan?

It depends on the work. A simple salaried return costs far less than a business return with a wealth statement full of property, or a notice that has reached the hearing stage. We give a fixed fee after seeing your documents. You can request a quote here.

Do I need a tax consultant for a simple salaried return?

Not always. Many salaried people can file on IRIS themselves. A consultant earns their fee when your wealth statement includes property or vehicles, when you have more than one source of income, when you need to claim withholding tax correctly, or when FBR has sent a notice.

Can I use a tax consultant in another city?

Yes. Filing, notice replies and most registrations are done online, so location only matters if you need someone to attend a hearing in person.

Is a cheaper consultant always a bad choice?

No, but check what the fee covers. A low fee that excludes the wealth statement or withholding adjustments can cost you more in tax and notices later.
